Today is the first day of the month of Elul. This month is very important. This month is the month of repentance. This is the month leading up to Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. In the Sephardic tradition, Slichot begins tomorrow. In the Ashkenazi tradition, recitation of the Slichot prayers begins the Saturday night before Rosh HaShanah. These prayers are usually recited between midnight and dawn.
This is also the month for blowing the shofar every morning, except for Shabbat. Asking for forgiveness and forgiving those who have sinned against us is a very important aspect of this time. Many people read Psalm 27 every day from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Hoshannah Rabah.
As you can see, this is a very important time for the Jewish community as well as to the individual. Perhaps you’d like to add one of these practices to this month.
