I think that most people believe that Judaism is like Christianity, just that it does not accept Yeshua as Messiah. This is not true at all.
Judaism has moved away from the study of the Tenach (Old Testament) and now most religious Jews study what Chazal (the sages) have written. These writings may take just one word or thought and then go off on a tangent which has nothing to do with the Scripture. These writings, such as the Mishna and Gamora, are seen as authoritative texts, just like the Tenach.
One area of thought which has gained much interest over the centuries is mysticism. It is common to teach mazalot (the zodiac). Also, when we lived in Florida, the JCC near us held a carnival which had a fortune teller! In Deuteronomy 18 we read, (10) There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer (11) or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, (12) for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And yet there are people who read horoscopes, have their palms read, go to fortune tellers, etc.!
Unfortunately, much of Christianity is moving in the same direction. Baruch recently share with me a clip where two men were talking about churches teaching that spiritual truth is somewhere inside of you. They rightly said that if we look into ourselves for any type of spiritual formation we are being led into a “black hole.” Man’s ways are not G-d’s ways!
All spiritual truth and revelation comes from G-d. It is found in His Word! If we believe that spiritual truth can be found within us intuitively, we are very wrong!
We must be careful how we are seeking to hear from G-d. Many people today are seeking unique “experiences”, “miraculous transformations” or some manifestation. What we need to be doing is reading G-d’s Word, praying to Him, and LISTENING as He responds to us seeking His TRUTH in these ways.
There is sooooo much false teaching. It is very sad.
So true Rivka. The Word of G-d will lead the way through the Holy Spirit!! Not in any false way. We have seen how the L-rd has moved in mighty ways when we seek Him and his Word. Bless you
