International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2021

I took this photo at Yad V’Shem in December 2019 during one of our tours.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an international memorial day on 27 January, commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews , by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 60/7 on 1 November 2005 during the 42nd plenary session. The resolution came after a special session was held earlier that year on 24 January 2005 during which the UN General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the end of the Holocaust.

On 27 January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army.

Below is part of an article from September 2020. It is shocking and disturbing:

A nationwide survey released Wednesday shows a “worrying lack of basic Holocaust knowledge” among adults under 40, including over 1 in 10 respondents who did not recall ever having heard the word “Holocaust” before.

The survey, touted as the first 50-state survey of Holocaust knowledge among millennials and Generation Z, showed that many respondents were unclear about the basic facts of the genocide. Sixty-three percent of those surveyed did not know that 6 million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, and over half of those thought the death toll was fewer than 2 million. Over 40,000 concentration camps and ghettos were established during World War II, but nearly half of U.S. respondents could not name a single one.

Please mention Holocaust Remembrance Day to those you come in contact with today!

Sadly enough Holocaust Remembrance Day has hardly been mentioned in the news today in the United States. The holocaust happened not that long ago there are still people around who lived and even experienced that monstrous injustice!
