We have a small portion left of Zechariah 12: Zechariah 12:10-14
v10: G-d is going to pour on those two groups of people -spoken about yesterday -His Spirit of grace and supplication. Supplication is the asking or begging for favour or grace or mercy. (remember: when G-d is dealing with Israel and His wrath is being poured out at the end the church has already been raptured. These people have been sealed, so they can endure what G-d is pouring out – Rev 7)
· G-d is revealing here that He is the One who was pierced (Yeshua dying on the cross) This is a radical statement. G-d is identifying the Christ or the Messiah (Yeshua) as G-d Himself. Divine.
· As mentioned in chapter 9 the Jewish people believe in many Messiahs but the two main ones they say are the son of Joseph (who is a suffering Messiah) and the son of David (who is a Conquering Messiah). They don’t see these Messiahs as G-d Himself but as instruments that He uses.
· As believers, we see that there is only one Messiah but He has different works to perform and comes at two different times. (He is the Son of Joseph as well as the Son of David). Joseph was only recognized/revealed to his brothers on the second visit to Egypt (Gen 43-45). Yeshua’s physical brothers (the Jewish people) will also only recognize Him at His second coming and they are going to mourn for the only begotten Son – Mourning for what they allowed the Romans to do to Him, but also mourning because they had failed to recognize and accept Him at His first coming. Mourning, in Jewish tradition, lasts for 30 days.
v11: The mourning in Jerusalem will be great, but so too will there be great mourning in the plain of Megiddo (Armageddon) as Yeshua comes on His white horse as a conqueror and defeats the nations (Rev 19:11-21)
When Yeshua comes again He goes to three places
1. Bozrah in Edom (Jordan) – Is 63:1, Amos 1:11-12 and Ezekiel 35
2. Armageddon (Rev 16:16)
3 The mount of Olives in Jerusalem (Zech 14:4)
v12-14: Before the giving of the law (Ex 19:14-15) the men and women were separated. There was an order as well to the way things were done. Here we see a separation between the men and women, and we see the ranks that they are placed in –
David – House of the Kings
Nathan represents the prophets
Levi and Shimei are the priests (Levi being the greatest to Shimei being the least of the priests) and then the rest of the people.
Note: At Mt Sinai G-d ordered the people to be separated as He was about to reveal something incredible to them. The law was given to them to show them how to live as a holy people that G-d was able to dwell amongst. G-d wanted the people to draw near to Him but they failed that day and remained at a distance (Ex 20:18-21) This time will be different and they will respond as G-d, through Yeshua, reveals Himself to them!
The law was revealed the first time – which they could not keep.
Yeshua is revealed to them the second time. It is only through Yeshua that we will be able to have G-d Himself dwell with us!
